The Death of Poland

By Glenn

Sorry to ruin your Saturday but everyone should know that the entire leadership of Poland has died in a plane crash. Though I usually don't link to papers with so many Jewish writers, the New York times article:
WARSAW — A plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of the country’s top political and military leaders to the site of the Soviet massacre of Polish officers in World War II crashed in western Russia on Saturday, killing everyone on board.

Among those on board the plane, the Polish government said, were Mr. Kaczynski; his wife, Maria; Ryszard Kaczorowski, who led a government in exile during the Communist era; the deputy speaker of Poland’s Parliament, Jerzy Szmajdzinski; the head of the president’s chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak; the head of the National Security Bureau, Aleksander Szczyglo; the deputy minister of foreign affairs, Andrzej Kremer; the chief of the general staff of the Polish Army, Franciszek Gagor; the president of Poland’s national bank, Slawomir Skrzypek; the commissioner for civil rights protection, Janusz Kochanowski; the heads of all of Poland’s armed forces; and dozens of members of Parliament.

That's basically their entire government. Imagine if you woke up this morning, around 11:00 am, after a Friday night house party that went until the early hours of the morning deep in the heart of Krakow. The first thing you see is that your entire government has been killed on a plane crash. The second thing you see is a person of a different sex and nationality lying next to you. The third thing you see is the following picture on TV:

If you're seeing that and you're an American teabagger, you probably have the slightest inkling of an erection at the thought of the President dying. That's because you're an awful person. For the rest of us, we remember what 1963 was like. That was the year President Kennedy was taken from us. Imagine if every single person in his cabinet, the head of the FBI, the head of the CIA et cetera were all on a plane with him when he died. Not the head of the CIA because he was involved in the assassination but you know what I mean. This is a dark day for Poland and November 22nd, 1963 was a dark day for America.

OYIT will be holding a virtual vigil Sunday morning at 5:00am (this coincidences with the state sponsored Monday night vigil in Poland). Please email to ask a question and attend.

  1. :( I'm going down to Chicago Ave. to mourn with the Polish community

  2. I'm going to Poland on Monday. I'll bring a webcam and broadcast the vigil on the virtual vigil for everyone.

  3. I tried so hard to come up with a good Polish airplane joke, but it just isn't happening. At least not until my article "Top 14 Ways the Polish Airplane Could Have Malfunctioned."

  4. This whole tragedy could have been avoided if the pilot wasn't busy helping the passangers change a lightbulb.

It took me a day, but that's the best I've got.
