Good Morning [Continental Airlines Flight 3407 Edition]

By Glenn

Good morning. What happened yesterday was very sad, and I'm not talking about Judd Gregg's heel turn on our President. Although his backstabbing could have easily been foreseen by the most prescient among us (liberal bloggers), no one could have predicted the unfortunate events that happened in Buffalo last night. If you haven't yet heard, please read on. And if you had, you are done. Stop reading and go thank your lucky stars you weren't on that flight.

[Sorry to get so serious but we have a lot of readers from the northeast and I would be sad if they got killed in a plane crash. Please do not think I'm trying to be snide or glib in anything I write today.]

Today's Weather

In previous weather maps, we've explored highs/lows but I didn't think we'd reach the emotional low of today. Just days ago Jake wrote in this very box about windy travel and back on January 29th I used an air turbulence map and made glib jokes about the FAA. For as much faith as we put in these maps and the meteorologists who make them, neither can predict the future. There was no map to warn Continental Airlines Flight 3407 that it was doomed nor was there a map to tell the people who lived in that house just how hot it was about to get. I've lost my faith in planes, weather and Jake.

Today's Profound Message of the Day
You can die at any time and it doesn't matter if you're on a plane. Did you know that out of the current 49 person death count, at least one person was killed on the ground? That means they weren't on the plane. This person was living their life in Buffalo, New York and killed by a plane flying into them. Can you imagine anything worse? It's like being a twin tower. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but if there's something you want to do in the future, I recommend you do it today, because you never know how much time you have left.
If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?

Today's MP3 Player
I joined a gym recently and realized it'd be great if I could listen to podcasts and even rock music while I literally ran around the track as a way to figuratively run from my problems. The question then became "what mp3 player do I buy?" After that, the question became "what is an mp3?" because in asking the first question I had to come to terms with the fact that I didn't actually know what an MP3 was. As if knowing what an mp3 is is important. As if the bullshit trivialities of our lives are important! They're not. I can buy all the fucking mp3 players I want but it's not going to bring anyone from 3407 back and it's not going to stop me from dying. Getting buried with your shit sounded great to Egyptian pharaohs but being buried with a bunch of mp3s just sounds sad to me.

Today's Prediction

This will be the last time I'm allowed to write a good morning post immediately after something awful happens in our world. Sorry for telling it like it is!

  1. Ha! It's Friday the 13th. I think tragedy is inevitable. The plane was a prelude to the destruction that will occur in the release of the reboot of Friday the 13th.

  2. It's like when you hear about people overdosing on heroin, you think, well they do HEROIN, YOU don't do heroin, you should be fine, but then you read about somebody overdosing on Robitussin...
