Untertainment Weakly (11-23-11)

By Jake

NBC will air a special called "Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America's Golden Girl.”  I still have no idea how they’re doing so poorly in the ratings when they are hitting home runs such as this.

Alyson Hannigan is pregnant, and if you care about that, then I have a great pity for you.  At least you are now aware of it.

Charles Barkley is set to host “Saturday Night Live” on January 7.  Why?  They thought it was January 7, 1998.

Debra Messing and her husband have split.  Good news for the single fellas out there.

The Atlanta Braves have filed a lawsuit against Pixar’s new medieval motion picture “Brave.”  Pathetic.

“Bored to Death” has been canceled, which proves that you should not name your TV after fatal boredom.

FOX has bought a script from Michael Showalter called “I Hate Your Friends.”

Movies Out This Weekend
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Did you read the book?  Do you like adaptations of novels directed by David Fincher?  Are you into dragons or tattoos?  See this movie if you answered yes to at least two of those questions.  I will not be seeing this film, probably ever.  It is supposed to be good, though.

The Adventures of Tintin - On a whim, I went to see this movie.  It was the first 3D film I have ever seen and I actually really enjoyed it.  Tintin is a character from a popular French comic book and the film is directed by Steven Spielberg.  3D is actually pretty cool and I’ll probably go see some other 3D cartoons at the cinema.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Oddly enough, famed animation director Brad Bird directed this sequel to “Mission Impossible,” while famed live action director Steven Spielberg directed the animated action movie “The Adventures of Tintin.”  If you were to ask me if you should see this movie, I would definitely say no.  Fuck “Mission Impossible” and fuck Thomas Cruise.

We Bought a Zoo - Cameron Crowe directed this film.  If that is a hard and fast selling point for you, and for some it will be, then see this flick.  I have seen the trailer to this film and it looks like it was made for babies and infantile adult women.  To me, this movie looks like it would be very boring.  Oh yeah, it’s about a a family buying a zoo, just like the title implies.

Other Thoughts
When I saw “The Adventures of Tintin” they played two trailers for upcoming rereleases of 3D movies that I need to talk about.  First up: “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.”  If you have not seen the film itself, it is pretty middling.  It is not flat out terrible like many “Star Wars” geeks will lead you to believe, but it is not so great.  The 3D in this film looks fucked up.  It looks like a 3D viewmaster.  Next up, and with a similar viewmaster quality, but not quite as bad as “The Phantom Menace,” is “Titanic.”  I hate the movie “Titanic,” but I love the boat.  The movie was a horrible romantic film built around a boat slowly sinking.  I used to love James Cameron, but after “Titanic” and “Avatar,” I am done with the guy.  You can see people fall off of a boat in 3D and people fall in love.  I don’t care if people see “Titanic,” but I really hope nobody sees “The Phantom Menace.”

  1. Haha! The Atlanta Braves learned the hard way when they got sued by the lost city of Atlantis! I always wanted to like Bored To Death, but I didn't watch it enough to allow that to happen. Now I probably never will. Thanks Jake!!

  2. Bored to Death is great - well, was. Now that it's been cancelled it's credibility went further down then hell and since hell is the most realistically far south one can get that's pretty bad!
I saw Tintin with Jake and it was awesome enough to make me forget about that horrible "Star Wars Fartisode 1: The Phantom Poopass" 3-D trailer. BOOOOO!
