I Miss You, Heidi

By Jake

A year or two ago, “The Hills” star Heidi Montag was America’s sweetheart. She was what we all wanted to be: beautiful, young, blond and talentless-yet-famous. Then she made the crucial mistake of so many of our idols--she got massive plastic surgery. She probably thought it would lengthen her career and not stop it in its tracks. Heidi Montag is nothing if not misguided.

Honestly, I never have seen the television program “The Hills,” outside of clips of it on “The Soup.” I am a 28-year-old male, not a 14-year-old girl, so I do not watch any shows on MTV. Yet, I miss Heidi Montag. She tried so hard and it was always good for a laugh. Remember her singing career? That was fantastic. She was a bumbling celebrity. She was the Inspector Clouseau of TV reality stars.

Now, all she is known for is the plastic surgery. She turned herself into a Frankenstein’s monster, when all she wanted to be was famous for nothing. Being famous for nothing is currently fairly easy to obtain in our culture. Looks at the Kardashians. I have no idea what they do, other than have a TV show. I know that Kim had sex with Brandy’s brother, Ray J, but outside of that there is no reason any of them are famous--and is that really a reason? Heidi Montag tried to do other things, which, in an odd way, is commendable.

Heidi Montag is a Jesus freak. Her husband, Spencer Pratt, almost became a cyber detective once. That is one of my all-time favorite celebrity rumors. Remember when Spencer freaked out because they removed the labels off of Heidi’s shampoo bottles on Survivor? All of that and she also starred on a heavily scripted “reality” show on MTV.

I say we give Heidi another shot. Let her join the cast of some dumb show like “The Real Houswives of Beverly Hills.” We don’t watch it anyway, so why not let her be on it while we’re not watching it? She is better than most reality stars because she tries to be famous for something and we can all derive some pleasure from that when it ends up being an awkward failure. Now that Michael Jackson has died, we need somebody else with massive plastic surgery to badmouth, but it is not fair unless they are famous. Heidi Montag is not famous right now, but hopefully someday soon she will be and I will be making fun of her once again in my weekly entertainment article.

Good Morning Divorcés

By Keelin

Sigh. Oh, good morning. I guess.

I apologize in advance if this good morning is only an adequate one. I'm not my usual jubilant self ever since my two favorite quasi-celebrity couples decided to jettison 54 combined years of marriage for what I can only imagine will be years of debauchery and carnal waywardness. (If country music is to be believed, though, Jesus is at the end of that path of sin -- like, to save you from it, not to participate in it.)

On Tuesday, Al and Tipper Gore, the Captain and Tennille of political life, announced they were divorcing after 40 years of marriage. Then yesterday, famed "Saved by the Bell" thespian Mark-Paul Gosselaar said he and his wife, some lady, are breaking up too! (Actually, I read on reliable gossip websites that her name is Lisa Ann Something -- I assume they bonded over the fact that they both have two first names. Apparently, that's only enough for 14 years of matrimonial bliss.) I haven't been this heartbroken since I found out Robert Pattinson is dating all of the Jonas Brothers.

Today's Weather

Rain, endless rain that poetically conveys my inner turmoil over the state of America's celebrity marriages. Can't any of my favorite couples stay together? Tiger and Elin Woods? Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head? Anyone?

Today's Movie

"The Gay Divorcée" is a film from a more wholesome time, when people settled their differences with ballroom dance and women were still getting used to this "voting" thing. Don't be confused by the title: this movie was made before the homosexual lobby stole the word "gay" from innocent Americans who were simply cheerful.

Today's Prediction

Al Gore will try internet dating under the Sarah Palin-inspired moniker ExtremeGreenie101. Meanwhile, Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski will re-unite on the Hawaiian beach immortalized in the "Saved by the Bell" TV movie. And everyone will be happy again.

Good Morning Grief

By Keelin

Good morning. It's a bright and sunny morning here in real America. I started my day the usual way: watched some American Idol clips, checked to see if any new killing fields had sprung up in the world, called up my pet psychic to pass on the good news about both these things.

It wasn't all unmitigated joy, though. Example! A few weeks ago I met a feral rooster on the Pacific coast. Now I've learned this bird, in the prime of his life, has been struck down by the cruel hands of fate and avian disease. Is this right, I ask you? No, the only thing that can justify the death of a rooster is if he is patient zero in the spread of some kind of disgusting epidemic against which Jenny McCarthy will tell us not to get immunized. Even then, it'd probably be OK if he just lived out the remainder of his days in isolation.

Today's Scientology Fact

Wait, before I tell you this, have you taken our personality test? Trust me, you're going to learn a lot about yourself. No pressure! [Please bring a major credit card. No personal checks.]

Today's History Lesson

On this day in 1945, Adolf Hitler committed suicide. He remains a touchstone of meaningless political comparison even in our own time!

Today's Prediction

The ghosts of Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson and Grace Kelly will haunt you until you start a grunge-pop fusion band and become better looking. Your band will enjoy moderate success until the drummer commits a gaffe on Twitter. You will be shunned by Ashton Kutcher and the world.

One Week In-tertainment (1-23-10)

By Jake

Miley Cyrus is not engaged.

Bruce Campbell is making a movie where he fights Frankenstein (I would guess his monster, but maybe he just fights the scientist).

Dennis Hopper filed for divorce. Ladies, start your engines (by engines I mean vaginas).

Katie Holmes called Suri "magical" according to People.

Heidi Montag's album only sold 1,000 copies :(

Heidi Montag continues to be stupid, which I guess is why she's famous in the first place.

Danielle Fishel has no problems with her body. Either did I when I was 12.

Tara Reid is engaged!

Quick aside: People has got to be the most banal website I have ever read. I don't think they would report "real" celebrity news if it happened.

According to People.com, Jessica Simpson has found her inner beauty.

Vampire Weekend are popular enough to have the number 1 album in America? I'm glad i don't listen to them now.

Conan O'Brien and NBC have finally come to terms for Conan's release. I can't wait to see him on Fox in September!

Jake's Take:
I feel like I gave my take on the Conan/Leno/NBC situation enough this week.

Peace to Our Fallen Homies
Nobody died! Hooray!

One Week Entertainment [1-18-09]

By Jake

Here at One Year in Texas, we're always looking for new way to entertain the public. So, I got to thinking: what better way to entertain people than talking about entertainment? Also, considering web-personalities like Perez Hilton gets about 5 million visits a day, and we get a little over 100 (which is still amazing, really), this could be really big for us.

So, on with the entertainment news:

Good news for fans of the only two good live action comedies on network television. The Office and 30 Rock have both been picked up for another season.

Also in an interesting turn of events, Pushing Daisies is coming back in the summer. This is good news, because scripted shows about gardeners are few and far between. This summer we'll be planting ourselves on the couch and growing very fond of this show, indeed.

In more exciting television news, it seems as if God may actually exist, because Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Pete Wentz are going to star in an upcoming episode of CSI: NY. They will be playing a Bonnie and Clyde-style couple. This is a great move for everybody, including us, the viewers.

Chuck, the live action story of Charlie Brown [check wikipedia before publishing], will be brightened up by TV's greatest poison-- Chevy Chase. Since being physically removed from his talk show, Chase has not appeared on a scripted television program. He has really not appeared in many movies, either. Although, he provides the voice of the lovable mutt in Karate Dog.

According to this article, Brody Jenner and his girlfriend like to stay home and bake cookies. If you have their recipe, please post it in the comments.

Amy Poehler has a new show set in my home state of Indiana. It is produced and written by people from The Office.

On January 15th, Happy Days celebrated its 35th birthday. I celebrated this momentous day by punching jukeboxes all day.

Don Cheadle is coming to TV. Hopefully either in a TV adaptation of Hotel for Dogs or Hotel Rawanda. Maybe next week I will be able to break the big news!

American Idol is on TV still.

John Mayer is working on a network variety show. This is great news for fans of everything that is wrong with America.

Patrick Swayze is still dying of cancer. From dirty dancer to fighting dirty cancer. We're with you Swayze.

Jennifer Hudson, known for singing and having her family murdered, is realizing another career high: singing at the Superbowl.

Emma Bunton, better known in America as Baby Spice, is featured in a very uninteresting article on People.com.

Former lesbian and psychopath Anne Heche is expecting another son.

Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppard are in talks to make a Moonlighting Movie. Cedric the Entertainer is now unable to ruin another TV-to-movie adaptation.

In a shocking bit of news David Cook and Kimberly Caldwell have decided to end their relationship. In a bit of unshocking news I have no idea who either of these people are.
