Local Business Showcase - States For Sale!

By Bub

Oh, you want States? Well, brother, I got States. I got any kinda State you'd want! I got green ones and pink ones; funny lookin' ones with handles coming off the sides; even ones with a bunch of roundish shapes floatin' around 'em. You can keep 'em in your pockets, you can put 'em on maps. Heck, you can even go on a vacation to one of 'em! And the best thing is - a State can never tell you it doesn't love you.

Sure, States may be filthy and thievin', but they're real hard workers, and boy, can they cook up a storm! I heard in an email that some of 'em come over the border illegally to have babies here so that they become citizens. That's wrong, if you ask me. My parents didn't come in this country illegally, and none of my ancestors did either. Sure, I feel bad for what they did to the Indians, but it wasn't against the law. That's my point, you see, not that killing Indians is OK - it's not - but it wasn't illegal for our forefathers to do it. They didn't come here to kill anybody. They just had to do it once they were here. They didn't even know so many of 'em would be here!

The pilgrims were being persecuted in their home country so they came here - legally, and killed the Indians - legally. There aint an argument you got that'll change those facts. And don't think for a minute that the Indians didn't kill any white people either, 'cuz they did.

So, yeah, I got some States for sale. If you want 'em make an offer. If not I'll just throw 'em on Craigslist or something.

Local Business Showcase: BRAIN STIX!!

By Bub

Focus in to intimate talk show set. Two Armenian Penthouse models in bikinis are sitting in director's chairs co-hosting a paid content interview. Next to the women is a sad middle aged salesman with greased black hair, a menacing grin and empty eyes. The title star-wipes across the screen, "In The Now." Then in cursive, "With The Tanzarian Twins" sweeps up from the bottom of the screen and pauses for a moment in the middle before disappearing. Model one begins the interview, in mid-conversation:

Model 1: Giggles. "So, Jack, TELL US - what do you do in the face of it?"

Sales Man: Holds hands towards hosts as though he were about to catch a bounce pass. "Ladies, let me tell you about a malevolent new product that is sweeping this very nation. It is salacious and superfluous. It cures the common cancer. And ladies, it will even keep up with you in the sack."

Model 1: "Those are important adjectives and properties. And what about the environment?"

Sales Man: A glowing ball of energy appears and disappears between the man's hands. It reappears and disappears again and continues this process. "Ladies, there isn't anything I could tell you about the environment that you don't already know yourselves. Ladies, I am talking about a revolution in fast food dining and unnecessary medication. Ladies, what I have between my hands, is going to change the way you watch TV. Ladies, what I am conjuring from secret lairs that were founded by actual skulls and bones is going to turn your toothbrush into an ipad, and vice versa. Ladies, there is no way to oversell or undersell this product. IT WILL WORK. Ladies, it is my privilege to present to you: BRAIN STIX!!" Two long slender objects resembling knitting needles appear where the pulsating energy ball had been. They have very sharp ends.

Model 1: BRAIN STIX!!?? Please tell us more??!!"

Sales Man: "Ladies, I'll do you four better. I'll show you how to pop popcorn in a dozen dimensions, simultaneously. Follow along closely, now. These here are BRAIN STIX!!. Ladies, that means they're for your brains. Let me give you a demonstration." Takes a BRAIN STIX!! stick in each hand, shoves one into the forehead of each co-host. The women fall to the ground writhing and bleeding. "You see you put them in your BRAINS." Still addressing the now deceased co-hosts. "There is only one way to wax your eyelids and make your lips redder, and that way, Ladies, is BRAIN STIX!!. BRAIN STIX!! enjoy spending time with their families and riding horseback into canyons, and the best thing is, Ladies, BRAIN STIX!! are cheaper than the cost of a cup of coffee each day for the rest of your life and every life hereafter." Gets out of seat, turns and addresses camera. "Ladies and Gentlemen, BRAIN STIX!! are a bona fide all-terrain utility-wagon, a Holiday Inn Express continental breakfast, a reversifier of diabetes and a professional golf tournament all in one. Please believe me." Reaches back between his shoulder blades and pulls out a BRAIN STIX!! stick. Inserts stick into top of head. Falls down writhing and bleeding.

Cut to a husband in a kitchen. Dishrag in one hand, spaghetti sauce covered plate in the other. The man is sobbing. "I can't get these dishes CLEAN!" He shrieks. He tosses the plate into the sink full of dirty dishes; opens the dishwasher which holds a single human head. He opens the silverware drawer and pulls out a BRAIN STIX!! stick and stabs it into the disembodied head.

Cut to a dog in a park catching a Frisbee in mid-air. The dog lands, spits out the Frisbee, and jumps to grab the next Frisbee which is already on its way. This goes on for eight more Frisbees. Camera then pans out to show a man weeping on a stool next to a mountain of infinite Frisbees. A very somber voice-over warns, "BRAIN STIX!!: You're already dead without them."

Cut to a cartoon conveyor belt in a factory labyrinth of pipes and belts. On the conveyor belt are CGI cartoon heads. Each one advances along the conveyor belt and receives a BRAIN STIX!! stick pummeled into the top of its skull. They proceed to the end of the belt where they fall into a giant bottomless dumpster.

Cut to doorway of a bedroom. A dashing young man is smiling and loosening his tie on the bed beyond. A very elderly woman is standing in the doorway and suggestively clutching the door frame. She gives a sly grimace and flirtatiously shrugs alternating shoulders. "With BRAIN STIX!! brand brain sticks, I now have my mornings free." She takes a BRAIN STIX!! stick from behind the door and jams it into her temple. She falls to the ground bleeding and writhing. The dashing young man continues to smile and loosen his tie.

Local Business Showcase: Peanut Butter?

By Bub

Three decrepit old men are inhabiting a dark, wood-paneled living room. They're bald and frail with the requisite liver spots. They look as if they could be brothers and they very well may be.

They sit in silence. On the left, one man sits still in a rocking chair with a jar of peanut butter nestled between his thighs. Another is laying on his side across a 1960's flower print couch, staring at the floor. He is covered by a crocheted blanket up to his protruding ribs. He is not wearing a shirt. The third man sits on the right in a recliner, unreclined. He is also still save for the involuntary biting motion that periodically forces his lower jaw out and up as if he were trying to catch a fly that had landed briefly on his bottom lip.

The man on the left lights a cigarette then dips an arthritis mangled, hair knuckled, claw into the jar of peanut butter and slathers the creamy sustenance across his tongue and swallows. He takes a drag of the cigarette then gently tosses the jar to the man on the couch. After his brain takes notice of the slight pain the peanut butter jar caused his hip upon impact the man on the couch looks in its direction without moving his head, slowly retrieves the jar and takes a sniff. Without changing facial expression, he extends his arm, jar in hand, in the direction of the man in the recliner in a protracted and trembling motion.

The man in the recliner clacks his teeth and leans sideways toward the couch, while still facing forward, stare fixed on nothingness. The man in the recliner makes contact with the jar with his right hand, but suddenly jerks backwards in his chair clasping his chest with his left. He lets out a dejected wheeze, "Baahhhhhh," then goes limp, dead.

The jar, still in the man on the couch's hand, drops to the ground, shattering. Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" begins playing as camera pans in to the shattered jar shards swimming in a pile of peanut butter. One rat arrives and is soon joined by another, and then another. Close up continues of rats feasting on peanut butter for the entire duration of the song.

Local Business Showcase: Raisinets

By Bub

Raisinets,’ chimes a four part choir as the Raisinets logo – the red letters on white field with deep-puce trim – superimposes onto a cross-street scene on Chicago’s west side.

Cut to vox-pop of dashing young Gangster Disciple, Frank.

“Yea, I kill ma’ fuckers over Raisinets… They’re that good.”

Cut to close-up of blind-folded thirteen year old, hands tied behind back, pleading for his life. "You should have thought about that before you came through here all flauntin' them Raisinets!" Frank executes the teen, semi-reminiscent of the famous Eddie Adams photo of a street execution in Saigon. Camera pans out to see the thirteen year old’s bike with a very large bag of Raisinets in the front basket. Frank tucks the pistol into his waistband, grabs the Raisinets, gives a sweeping glance for witnesses, then flees.

Raisinets,’ chimes a four part choir.

“It’s true; I sold my child into slavery for Raisinets. They just taste so good. You wouldn’t understand, it’s like licking God’s asshole,” says Rogelio, a middle aged meat-packer.

Cut to dramatic recreation of Rogelio’s transaction. Rogelio is visibly weeping, his daughter, Inez, who is ten, is unaware that she will never see her father again and is very confused. A Yale graduate in a trench coat approaches the dark corner of the parking garage where Rogelio and Inez are waiting. The Yale grad opens a briefcase revealing at least a dozen bags of Raisinets. Rogelio begins to wail at the sight and collapses to the ground. The trench-coated man yanks Inez away from her father and flings the brief-case full of Raisinets, open, with disdain, in Rogelio’s direction. Inez and The Man flee; Inez is still confused but somewhat relieved to be leaving her abusive father. Camera closes in on wailing Rogelio who is now fisting into his mouth unopened bags of Raisinets, along with copious amounts of snot, and tears.

Raisinets,’ chimes a four part choir.

Cut to a shack, deep in the Montana woods, a fully bearded man in a hooded sweatshirt, resembling the Unabomber, is packing a bomb into a Fed Ex box. Camera pans in to the faux Unabomber, ‘Oh, God... Raisinets!!' he gasps, as he shakes his fists in the air then tapes the box shut, pauses, and collapses onto the table, head in arms, weeping.

Cut to a shot of a Federal building exploding somewhere in the Great Plains.

Raisinets,’ chimes a four part choir as the Raisinets logo – the red letters on white field with deep-puce trim - flashes across the screen obscuring the burning debris and human misery.

Local Business Showcase: Futuristic Thai

By Bub

Welcome to Futuristic Thai.

Futuristic Thai is a family style restaurant that serves the palette’s desire for authentic Thai cuisine, and humankind’s wish to know what the future holds in store.

If you have a thirst that only knowledge of the future can quench, have a seat at our battery bar - Minnesota’s first and only full alcoholic bar made out of batteries – while you wait for your table. In the future many things that today are made out of various familiar materials will be made out of batteries. And the slight electric charge emitted by our battery stools will keep you ‘going and going…’ just like that pink bunny who will one day serve as president.

At Futuristic Thai, we set the tone right. In the future, everyone will be millionaires. As you are escorted to your dinner tables you will be literally showered with Thai currency by our house Thai millionaire. No paper napkins here, what is this, the 21st century? Only million dollar bills will be used to wipe things from your body at Futuristic Thai. At Futuristic Thai you will be given a giant pet lizard as will be the fashion three hundred years from now. This lizard is welcome to chew on money scraps or warm its belly on one of our oversized batteries while you enjoy your meal.

For dinner choose from Minnesota’s widest array of authentic Thai cuisine with futuristic influences and attitude. The grains used to make our Drunken Noodles have been genetically modified to be able to actually ingest alcohol to excess causing cellular damage. Try our Millionaire Pad Thai made with strips of giant pet lizard meat, spring onions and topped with chopped million dollar bills and fresh squeezed lime juice. Our House Special is Laksa Soup. Unlike contemporary Laksa recipes, our fish balls contain no fish at all. Instead you will find the most exclusive futuristic ingredients – money paste, coriander and chopped peanuts - stuffed inside a battery casing. This dish will make you feel warm and comfortable. ‘Just like Mom used to make, when she made Laksa Soup three hundred years in the future.’

So if you’re hungry and you are yearning to experience the joys of a simpler lifestyle in a simpler time; if you want to trade in your workaday cares for a house made out of batteries, a giant pet lizard, and millions of dollars worth of delicious Thai food; make it Futuristic Thai.
