20 Things I'd Rather do than see GI Joe

By Glenn

GI Joe is one of those "once in a lifetime" movies. Like the time I was robbed at knife point while shirtless in downtown Columbia, Missouri, I know that seeing GI Joe is something that will only happen once and never again - no matter how many times I walk the mean streets of North Dakota, shirtless. I've said this about a million times to anyone who will listen (a rapidly shrinking group), but I hate movies that are made to trick idiots into paying for something because it reminds them when they were younger. That isn't a good reason to pay for a movie any more than it is a good reason to reacquaint yourself with an older lover. Here are my 20 things I'd rather do than see the assuredly stupid GI Joe movie.

  1. Date another sociopath for a much longer time period.
  2. Drink 24 cans of Natty Light and then vomit in front of my parents.
  3. Do paid canvassing for a Evangelical conservative Republican in a primary for a state representative race in Utah.
  4. Sleep outdoors in a tent.
  5. Agree to write a 20 page research paper for a college friend "just to help him/her out."
  6. Take every single Facebook quiz in one day that I've seen since FB quizzes began.
  7. Relive the age of 10.
  8. Take a vow of abstinence from blogs for one year and instead just watch cable news.
  9. Try to carry on a conversation with someone who thinks the Earth is 6,000 years old.
  10. Be a contest on a "reality" TV dating show and not be able to use sarcasm.
  11. Choosing something to give up for Lent because I think it's important to my religious beliefs.
  12. Spend an entire day talking about politics, without ever revealing my own beliefs, with the guy that shouted pro-Bush statements during the Pearl Jam song "Bu$hleader" in the 2003 concert Brandon and I attended.
  13. Live on $1 a day, or whatever the standard of living is for someone who is in absolute poverty.
  14. Have a trust fund that keeps me from ever having to acknowledge the economic realities of people in this country or in the rest of the world.
  15. Write a "five star" review of the movie Tomcats.
  16. Get food poisoning once a month for the rest of my life.
  17. Watch one of my best friends be stabbed to death by a homeless man.
  18. Meet my birth parents, find out they're happily married with three kids, and have them tell me they thought they had gotten an abortion.
  19. Start eating meat after seven years of abstinence because "it really tastes good."
  20. Watch the GI Joe Cartoon completely unironically and get seriously into the plots of episodes and then make a case to a peer that they were rife with social commentary on the military-industrial complex.

Friday Morning

By Jake

It's Friday, which means that this week is finally over. I'm not saying that it was a particularly bad week, but it was a pretty boring week. If you were a shark then it was probably a good week for you, but everybody knows that sharks don't like reading, therefore you're probably not one.

peeling paint
This is some peeling paint from my garage. This is, in fact, the second picture I posted of my garage this week. I guess it was about time to show my garage some love and not just fill it with rocks and the old dining room table there was no room for inside.

This is the opening to the smash hit television cartoon Camp Candy, which was based off of John Candy's life as a camp counselor. This is the Arabic version of the song, though. I didn't know that John Candy was so big that they needed to translate his biographical cartoon into other languages (besides Spanish and French, of course).

Pocahaunted is one of my favorite bands. They're dubby drone music made by two ladies that (at least in this video) look like they got dressed during a Double Dare physical challenge where they had to put on as much clothes as possible in 30 seconds. That may be a slight exaggeration, but they are dressed very sloppy. There are some other dudes with them. I think they generally play all of the instruments on their albums.

A Kate Miller of ProYo fame update: I have not heard from Kate Miller, but I still love her.

Thursday is For Lovers

By Jake

It's Thursday, which is like a Friday for college students (even if they have class on Friday). I don't understand it and when I was in college I treated only Fridays as if they were Fridays. Call me old fashioned if you must, but my GPA was 3.5. I also didn't really have friends at college so I read books in the basement of our building. It really is a toss-up as to which path is the correct one.

broken window with tree reflection
This is a picture of the broken window on my garage. I honestly don't know why there even is a window on the garage. It doesn't open (not that it needs to since it's broken) and nobody lives in there, nor would they want to. Still, it makes for a good picture, in my opinion.

This is a kid's guide to being cool hosted by Malcom Jamal Warner. It's sort of like All That minus the laughs. This is possibly the best video I've ever posted on OYIT. Plus, it's informative. Win-win.

Enter the Yo-Zone. My favorite member of ProYo is Kate Miller. She knows how to deliver a joke and can sling a yo-yo better than a man (this is self-proclaimed, but who am I to dispute?). This video made me very thankful that the 90s are over. If you're nostalgic for the "simpler times" of the 1990s, just remember: in the 90s cool people wore fanny packs and neon clothes. Now only flamboyant homosexuals and 50 year old men do.

All kidding aside, if Kate Miller happens to Google herself and comes across this article, don't hesitate to email us. We'd love to hear from you.

Another Morning Stoner

By Jake

It's Tuesday and it's August. I don't know about you, but the weather has been unreasonably nice this year. The thermometer has barely gone past 85 more than a handful of times and it was 75 almost all day yesterday. I'm expecting 100 degree weather throughout September and October, two weeks of fall and then 100 years of snow and ice.

This is from RAW last night. Jeremy Piven and his Asian friend Dr. Ken were the guest hosts and when Dr. Ken tried to get in John Cena's face he got slammed on his head. It looks like it hurt a lot, but there is no way that it was more painful than watching him ruin RAW all night. I say that this is karma.

And You Will Know US By The Trail of Dead are a band with an impossibly long name and a Deftones-like ability to have only one album worth listening to. Source Tags and Codes is an undeniably great album. This is from that album, and since they are on Geffen/Interscope so I can't embed it. At least they're not on Warner Bros., who doesn't even allow their videos to be put on Youtube. Warner doesn't understand or want free promotion. They'd just as soon have nobody see their music videos that they spend money on. MTV is too busy showing Hustle and Flow to play music videos. Not that I don't like Hustle and Flow (or that I'd actually watch MTV for any reason), I'm just saying.

Hope you have a great day.

Life With Mikey [8-03-09]

By Mikey

I used to hate mowing the lawn. Then I got a riding lawn mower. It's not as fun as taking a trip in the car, because I don't inevitably end up at an Arby's or Sizzler. I just end up in the garage, but at least the lawn is mowed for a couple weeks and my wife isn't yelling at me anymore.

When I see a person wearing a shirt with the Tazmanian Devil on it I know to avoid that person.

I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, but maybe the Church shouldn't tell people not to wear condoms.

Underdog is better as a giant balloon than it is as a live action movie. That was the last time I let my wife pick which movie we'd get from Netflix.

Donkey Kong Jr. is better than Donkey Kong, in my opinion.

Sometimes my neck hurts so much after I wake up from sleeping. Maybe I should do yoga, but I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Sometimes I buy chow mein noodles instead of Pringles.

I don't really find The Onion funny. It's just fake news stories, anybody could do that.

I find Mr. T's style of dress to be gaudy.

I'd rather protect my family with throwing stars instead of a gun. Guns are too loud.

Mr. Magoo isn't funny at all. He's just blind. Nothing funny about disabilities.

I'm not a huge Johnny Depp fan, but I'd definitely let his character Edward Scissorhands give me a haircut.

I just got a bunch of new fishing lures.

Superman is actually a really good scientist. I think people overlook that usually.

I wish they'd stop making movies based off of 80s cartoons. I'm moving to Antarctica if a Pound Puppies movie comes out.

I bet I could eat more hamburgers than Jughead.

Good Morning from North Dakota part 3

By Glenn

Good morning. Welcome to part three of a two part installment chronicling my life in North Dakota as seen through the prism of a "Good Morning" post. The last time I wrote to you on this website - what I consider my personal dream journal - I had just discovered the abundance of bison ("buffalo" for those who have a passion for racism against our great American Indian). Now I've seen the world's largest buffalo in person, and without my parole office present. That will be discussed later, but the point is that things have changed.

[I also spend late nights in the office playing guitar. This has nothing to do with bison, buffalo or Neil Young. Or, actually, I take that back. That has EVERYTHING to do with Neil Young.]

Today's Weather

No one talks about the weather anymore, no matter how much R.E.M. might wish. But I'm here to tell you about the Ls and the Hs! For years meteorologists and less educated but equally beautiful "weather girls" have tried to decipher what these letters mean. I'd love to drop a great joke here about what I think they mean, but I never graduated from high school. It's as sore of a spot for me as it was for Uncle Jesse on that episode of Full House. The day I went to get my GED, the weather forecast was just an L - not unlikely the big red L sitting over my state on the map above. So i stayed home instead because I didn't know what it meant and still don't. Ideas? Post in the comments section for reader input.

Today's Error Message

I always get this fucking message when I'm trying to listen to Talking Heads or Wilco on iTunes. Sometimes I even get it when I'm listening to less hip bands like Xiu Xiu or Blues Traveler. I'd like to think that error message comes on when I start listening to music I shouldn't be listening to, like really early Beach Boys. You know, when all the songs were about driving around in some fucking car or making out with girls. These are things no self respecting man would ever want to hear in music in 2005, which must be why my computer from that year brings up that error message every time I listen.

Today's Buffalo
There are buffaloes all over the world, but why dance around the obvious? There's only one largest buffalo in the world, and it's this one. It's located right now in Jamestown, North Dakota which is to North Dakota what Hoboken is to New Jersey. The buffalo is 26 feet high, 46 feet wide and weighs 60 tons. To put it in perspective, that's bigger than the moon and sun combined! Unlike those planets, this buffalo doesn't revolve around our Earth but the Town of James definitely revolves around it. The buffalo, and the "old time" wild west village that surrounds it account for nearly 85% of the town's GDP. Between the souvenirs and bubble gum ice cream cone I got, I probably paid enough money to fund a year of primary education for the few children who survive the harsh Jamestown winters. The buffalo is really big but too tall for me to ride it. So I took that picture instead.

Today's Prediction
The Jamestown Buffalo, long ago killed for the sake of tourism, will come back to life and ride along the blue and red trails laid down in that fucked up H and L weather shown above. After I leave North Dakota in a few months I'll go back in time, kill Brian Wilson and Mike Love, and then rewrite all the songs the Beach Boys wrote about cars to be about buffaloes instead. That way when the Jamestown World's Largest Buffalo goes on its walking rampage in 2009 I'll make a shit load of money off the royalties and will finally be able to replace my four year old computer and listen to as much Blues Traveler as anyone can realistically stand.

Recession Busters

By Jim

People often stop me on the street and ask me questions. Most people ask for change (I usually lie or, if I recognize them, preempt their questions and ask them for change), for sex (yes if she, he, or he-she has a bangin’ body), or if I’m a famous person, but once in a blue moon (blue moon=1.16699016 × 10-8 hertz, or approximately every two-and-a-half years) someone asks a real stumper like, “how can I beat this goddamn mother fucking recession?

Hahaaaa. Well, as you can imagine, reader, I had no answer the first few times someone popped the said question—I felt like a royal jack-ass (Prince Willem-Alexander of Holland)—and I abruptly regressed back to a state of adolescent inadequacy, and underwent a “dark night of the soul.” However! My search ended earlier today, when I concluded my year-and-a-half long bender, shaved off my mourning beard, and came up with these easy-to-do recession busters:

1. Rob Drunk College Students for Your Drinking Money

Self-explanatory, and very convenient, given you can’t throw a rock without hitting one. Find a knife, find a lone drunk college student stumbling to God-knows-where, and knock him or her down to the ground. Show your blade. If they give you any guff, stick him or her in the arm or the leg (don’t hit any major arteries, though) to show you’re serious. Strike at random, and never strike the same location twice. Use your brain.

2. Tip Strippers with Lower-Valued Foreign Currency

This one is great. Some foreign currency looks remarkably like the U.S. dollar, and the strippers probably won’t notice until the show is over. What’s the worst that could happen? You’ve already received their services. Worst case scenario, they make you work to pay off your debt.

3. Go to Prison

Think about it! You lose your job. You can’t support your family, so your wife leaves you and takes the kids (you didn’t like them anyway). Your dog dies while driving over one of America’s many collapsing bridges (you liked him, but what was he doing driving a car?), or any of the other innumerable recession-doomsday scenarios.

How can anyone recover in a recession lustfully staring at the ass of some new and more devastating Great Depression? Answer: Wait it out in prison!

Sound crazy? At least consider the benefits.

• You will have three meals a day, so your neighbors’ cats won’t mysteriously go missing anymore. Prison food may not delight your taste buds as much as certain agile four-legged creatures (unless Martha Stewart winds up in your penitentiary [and she will!]!), but they’re dependable and you don’t have to chase them down and smash their skulls in.

• Don’t forget, once you’re in prison, you’ll have lots of time to learn and do all the things you couldn’t when you were trapped in your desperately lonely and horrid former life. You can learn an instrument (harmonica is popular), learn to cook (not just meth), play sports (like NBA Street, except in a prison yard and Southern Mexicans always win), experience other cultures (mostly Southern Mexican), and earn several degrees from accredited universities—opportunity is around every corner (albeit, so are the Southern Mexicans).

• FREE HEALTHCARE! FREE FUCKING HEALTHCARE.

• And, most importantly, FREE GYM MEMBERSHIP. You will have all the time in the world to trim those love handles (if starvation hasn’t already) and put on your very own gun expo—not to mention you’ll build such a great ten-pack vendors will begin selling ten-packs.

Some of you are probably wondering, “what about prison rape?” Well, the best part is the bottom of this recession is no where in sight, so give it two or three years, and conditions outside of prison will be pretty much the same as conditions inside—minus all the aforementioned benefits.

There are a plethora of arrestable offenses, all depending on how long you wish to stay on the inside. Here are some examples:

• arson - 5 years to life (depending on if anyone is injured or killed)
• drug trafficking - 5 years to life (depending on how dangerous the drug is and the quantity)
• prostitution – 1-18 months
• armed robbery – 1- 10 years (depending on injuries to others and how dangerous the preferred weapon is)
• kidnapping – 1-15 years (depending on how seemingly planned out and violent you want to be)

Worried about fines? Don’t be. You can extend your sentence instead of paying them so commit your crime with this in mind—and everyone will owe someone a shit load of money by the end of this economic down-turn. Worried about a record? Again, most of us will have a record or will have died by the time this thing ends.

4. Leave Your Family

Leave them in the woods, leave them in a garbage can—doesn’t matter. When resources are low the first instinct of any non-human animal is to abandon their cubs. Take a cue from Mother Nature, and live to survive and carry on your genes another day.

5. Get that Gov’ment Cheese

Unemployment. Welfare. Food Stamps. Student Aid. Get it all. Do whatever it takes to maximize the amount and duration of government financial aid programs. No one can stop you. Not even Ronald Reagan. He’s dead.

6. Convince Someone to Take Out a Life Insurance Policy with You as the Sole Benefactor, and then Kill that Person

I read about some ladies volunteering for a church-run shelter (Luthern, I think?) doing this to some homeless guy. Genius. But they got caught. Don’t get caught.

Well, that concludes my list. If I think of anymore, I’ll surely let you all know. Don’t shy away from any tips you’ve got for me, either.

*Disclaimer: Don’t actually do any of these things. They’re jokes (even if they’re not good ones) written by a (semi)professional on a closed course. If you do them anyway, you didn’t hear them from me.
